Distorted Weekly Vol. 1

Mac Miller - ‘I Love Life, Thank You’

Each week we will be publishing a playlist full of new releases to help kickstart your week. Here are a few of our favorite’s from this week’s playlist.

‘Love Lost’ - Mac Miller

Written by Juli Regueiro

As re-releases of past albums becomes more and more prevalent, here’s one I was waiting for.  With what started as a way to gain followers, “I Love Life, Thank You” is a mixtape by Mac Miller that was released in 2011 when He reached 1 million followers on twitter. Riddled with outlandish and simple tracks, it’s hard to pick a favorite.

Yet “Love Lost” perfectly captured my attention off this mixtape. A beautifully written and layered song about losing love to rising fame. Maybe it’s the relatability of this track or catchy hook that completely replays in my head. This mixtape is truly a reminder of the talent we lost in 2018. If you haven’t checked him out, I suggest taking this as a sign to listen to Mac Miller.

‘Don’t jump the gun’ - Sfven

Written by Christina Gaster

I came across Sfven on Spotify upon the release of “don’t jump the gun” and was immediately drawn in by the upbeat indie pop single. It’s the kind of track that immediately puts you in a good mood, and makes you want to get up and dance around your room.

‘don’t jump the gun’ is the first single off of Sfven’s new mixtape ‘you, green’ which is set to release later this year. This track sets the scene with an infectious beat and lyrics that serve as a reminder to cease overthinking, and focus on the present. It’s the perfect song to blast for those late night drives with the windows down.

‘Paraphonic’ - Cuco

Written by Masha Beach

Cuco has just released his fourth album ‘Fantasy Getaway’. I listened to the album from beginning to end, and it felt like I had entered into an alternate dimension. The psychedelic essence of the song ‘Paraphonic’ immediately drew my attention. The term paraphonic is used to describe synthesizers that can play more than one note at a time. This was commonly used in the 70s.

Obviously I was quick to relate this song to Tame Impala’s texture and sound, but ‘Breathe (In the Air)’ by Pink Floyd instantly came to my mind. I was also getting glimpses of Empire of the Sun. To my interpretation, the trippy and free flowing soul of the chorus in ‘Paraphonic’ provides lyrics that are portraying a hopeless relationship and is beautifully sad.

‘Pickup Lines’ - Forrest Nolan

Written by Masha Beach

‘Pickup Lines’ is an upbeat indie pop song that is perfect to listen to this summer. Forrest Nolan posted a photo of the single cover on Instagram and in the caption let us know that ‘Pickup Lines’ is “a song about dating apps.” Talking about drunk voice notes and ghosting leads me to conclude that this is a coming of age song that is very relatable.

A line in the chorus that sticks out to me is,

“I think these pick-up lines might be killing me

And if they’re not, they’re wasting my time.”

Thinking of the right words to say to someone that you like is harder than you anticipate. Sometimes things don’t work out the way you plan no matter what you do or say. So this summer, stream ‘Pickup Lines’ while you hopelessly scroll through dating apps.
